Overview
About this product
IGF-1 LR3 is a recombinant analogue of insulin-like growth factor 1. It carries a thirteen-residue N-terminal extension and an arginine in place of the glutamic acid at position 3. Together these changes greatly reduce binding to IGF-binding proteins, which is why it is widely used in cell culture, where it stays available to the IGF-1 receptor for longer than native IGF-1. Typical laboratory uses include cell-culture media studies, IGF-1 receptor signalling and comparisons with native IGF-1. Supplied as a lyophilized powder in a sealed vial. What the research shows The studies cited here are in animals. In a 1992 study of rats given dexamethasone, LR3 IGF-1 was approximately 2.5-fold more potent than native IGF-1 on body weight and nitrogen retention, even though it binds the type 1 IGF receptor 3-fold less well; the authors linked this to its weak binding to IGF-binding proteins. A 1997 study in pigs compared IGF-1 with four variants that bind poorly to IGF-binding proteins, including LR3 IGF-1; the variants were 2- to 3-fold more potent than IGF-1 at lowering plasma glucose and suppressed it for longer. About this compound
IGF-1 LR3 (Long Arg3 IGF-1) is a recombinant analogue of human insulin-like growth factor 1. Mature IGF-1 is 70 residues. LR3 is 83: a 13-residue N-terminal extension (MFPAMPLSSLFVN) is added, and arginine replaces glutamic acid at position 3 of the IGF-1 sequence. Both changes sharply reduce binding to the IGF-binding proteins, so in cell culture the analogue stays available to the IGF-1 receptor far longer than native IGF-1. That is why it is a standard supplement in serum-free media and a common comparator in IGF-1 receptor signalling work. The vial contains 1 mg. The milligrams are the contents of the vial.
