Overview

About this product

MOTS-c is a sixteen-amino-acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene, one of a small family of mitochondrial-derived peptides. Since its description in 2015 it has been studied in cell and animal models of energy metabolism, AMPK signalling and the communication between mitochondria and the nucleus. Research with MOTS-c benefits from careful controls for cell type and metabolic state, since baseline mitochondrial activity varies widely between models. Supplied as a lyophilized powder in a sealed vial. What the research shows In the papers cited here, MOTS-c was given only in laboratory and mouse experiments; the human work measured the body's own MOTS-c. A 2018 study reported that MOTS-c moves into the nucleus under metabolic stress, in an AMPK-dependent manner, and regulates nuclear gene expression. A 2021 study reported greater physical performance in young, middle-aged and old mice given MOTS-c, and found that exercise raised endogenous MOTS-c in human skeletal muscle and circulation. A 2018 study of 10 lean and 10 obese adults found similar plasma MOTS-c in both groups, 0.48 and 0.52 ng/mL. Sources: Kim et al., Cell Metabolism, 2018, PMID 29983246. Reynolds et al., Nature Communications, 2021, PMID 33473109. Cataldo et al., Journal of Investigative Medicine, 2018, PMID 29593067. For laboratory research use only. Not for human or veterinary use. Purity and identity are stated on the batch certificate, published on this page once it is on file.

A score shows how much published research covers an area: 1 for fewer than 5 papers, 2 under 20, 3 under 100, 4 under 500 and 5 from 500, plus half a point when the area includes randomised controlled trials and a full point from 10 of them (5 at most). It measures the amount of research, not an effect. Each count links to its PubMed search.

About this compound

MOTS-c is a peptide of 16 amino acids encoded in mitochondrial DNA, in the 12S rRNA region, rather than in the cell nucleus. The sequence reported with the original description is Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg. The vial contains 10 mg.

Published research

These are published papers about the molecule. A paper is not a dose, not medical advice, and not evidence that this vial is for human or veterinary use.

  1. The mitochondrial-derived peptide MOTS-c promotes metabolic homeostasis and reduces obesity and insulin resistance.

    Cell Metabolism · 2015 · PMID 25738459

The paper that first described MOTS-c, including mouse experiments. The title is the paper's claim, not a claim about this vial.

  2. MOTS-c: A promising mitochondrial-derived peptide for therapeutic exploitation.

    Frontiers in Endocrinology · 2023 · PMID 36761202

A review of the 16-residue peptide. Peptune does not adopt the review's therapeutic framing.
